Jeff Chang Built An Airport In Taiwan So He Could Fly His Own Plane
Ah, rich people things.
Taiwanese crooner Jeff Chang was one of the biggest stars back in the ‘90s ─ he’s estimated to have sold some 25 million albums over the past three decades ─ so it should come as no surprise that the 53-year-old is rolling in money.
In fact, the Prince of Ballads is rumoured to have an estimated net worth of about NT1bil (S$44mil).
Apart from being a singer, Jeff is famous in the art world for his massive antique and art collection and was even profiled by famed auction house Sotheby’s in 2017. He also has a thing for real estate and is said to own a lot of property in China and Taiwan.
Jeff, who is now promoting his 35th album See The Light, recently gave an interview where he talked about what he was up to when the pandemic was still raging in Taiwan. He shared that he had felt very stressed during that period because a lot of his work was put on hold and he had “staff to feed”.
“When I was anxious, I would go for walks, and I would walk around the mountain behind my home,” he added.
According to Jeff, he would often travel to Hualien, adding, to the surprise of the reporter, that he owns a plot of land there. His land in Hualien is also home to his four horses (yet, another surprising revelation about the singer) and is where he built his ─ wait for this ─ own airport.
Turns out, Jeff loves flying and owns his own plane, a light aircraft. And so to make his hobby more accessible, decided to build an airport in the county.
“A few years ago, I went with some friends to buy land in Hualien. The neighbours are all my friends and so now, when I have time, I would take my family there to ride horses and fly my plane,” he said.
When the reporter mentioned that while everyone remains landbound because of the pandemic, Jeff is actually soaring in the skies. Upon hearing that, the singer laughed and said, “Yeah, I really am just gliding in the sky above the Pacific Ocean.”
When asked if he flies alone, Jeff said that because he hasn’t clocked enough flight hours, he needs to be accompanied by an instructor whenever he flies.
