It was all just a huge — and rather amusing — misunderstanding.

It’s no secret that Hongkong singer G.E.M has got a serious set of pipes on her. The 29-year-old, who recently had the honour of becoming the first female Mandopop star to have three music videos cross the 100 million view mark on YouTube, is known for being able to belt out powerful notes with ease, an impressive skill she shows off from time to time on her socials (when she’s not tearing it up on stage, of course).

Recently, G.E.M shared a video of herself attempting an internet challenge, which was to sing the beginning of Lady Gaga’s ‘Bad Romance’ (the “oh-oh-oh” part) in increasingly higher-pitched notes. However, while the original challenge called on people to go up seven notes, she took it even further and went 10 notes higher, simply ‘cos she can.

Among the many comments praising her for her vocal prowess was a single-worded remark from Singapore’s own JJ Lin, who wrote “Easy” with a grinning emoji.

While the 39-year-old singer obviously meant that this challenge was way too simple for someone like G.E.M, one netizen, who apparently failed to notice who the comment came from and misunderstood its meaning, thought JJ was some random hater mocking G.E.M and basically chided him for being a keyboard warrior.

The statement attracted thousands of ‘likes’ from other users (who need to work on their reading comprehension skills as well).

Fortunately, other more discerning folks quickly came to JJ’s defense, shooting back with “Take a look at who that is” and “Open your eyes”. The incident sparked a heated discussion among netizens, who pointed out how poor JJ was wronged and got scolded even though he was clearly expressing his admiration for G.E.M. Some also found the whole thing very amusing.

This little saga eventually caught the attention of G.E.M herself, and she played along by replying to JJ’s comment saying, “Keyboard warrior, since when did you come out?”

Remember to carefully read and process everything before leaving nasty comments on the internet, everybody.

3 of 3 Seriously, why would JJ Lin go around hating on other singers’ pages?
