The COVID-19 situation has been bad news for many businesses. But for some, they’ve been given some welcome respite in the form of rental discounts to help them tide over these tough times.

Take Korean power couple Kim Tae Hee and Rain, for example. They made headlines for slashing the rent in their respective buildings by 50 per cent, which, according to reports, would cause the stars to suffer hefty losses. Their act of kindness, though, has made them heroes in the eyes of netizens.

Days after Rain and Kim Tae Hee's Good Samaritan act came to light, another celeb landlord made a similar decision. Actress Jun Ji Hyun, or Gianna Jun, who you might remember from the hit movie My Sassy Girl as well as the hugely popular drama My Love From The Star, confirmed that she was offering a 10 per cent cut in rent for tenants in her Gangnam building for the months of March and April.

You’d think that the news would be greeted with some form of praise, but the exact opposite happened. Netizens started criticising her for doing the bare minimum for what they think is a purely PR move, claiming that actress has a penchant for hoarding her wealth.

“She’s among the top five [wealthiest celebs] in our country in terms of real estate holdings. Couldn’t she a bit more generous to the people who are really suffering?” one netizen wrote. Another added, “I remember reports saying that she bought that building without taking out a loan. For her to be able to fork out 32.5bil won (S$37.7mil) like that means that she has much more stashed away.”

Jun Ji Hyun is married to a former banker who has since become the CEO of an investment firm with assets estimated at 350bil won (S$405.8mil).
