Korean Singer Lee Hyori Waives The Rent For Her Building’s Tenants In Light Of COVID-19 Business Slump
Not everyone is impressed though.
In the midst of heated discussions between netizens over whether Korean actresses Jun Ji Hyun and Kim Tae Hee slashing the rent for their buildings by 10 per cent and 50 per cent respectively qualifies as “generous enough”, Korean singer Lee Hyori has been revealed as the most generous of them all.
According to reports, she has waived the rent for her tenants for the month of March. Her generosity was exposed when one of her tenants approached Korean news agencies to share that they received a text message from Hyori saying that she would not be collecting any rent for the month of March.
The tenant expressed his disbelief and gratitude to the 40-year-old star as his business has suffered because of the COVID-19 outbreak.
Hyori's building, which is located in the upscale neighbourhood of Hannam-dong, was bought over by the singer and her husband Lee Sang Soon last October. The four-storey building is estimated to have cost the couple KRW 5.8bil (S$6.8mil).
The building’s tenants are a mix of restaurants and offices, and with the F&B industry being hit hard because people are now afraid to eat out, Hyori’s move has been lauded.
“Even a 50 per cent discount was generous enough, but this goes to show that she and her husband are really good people,” one netizen mused.
But another netizen had a different take. “This goes to show what an easy life celebrities have. Even if they were to waive rental fees for more than month, they’d still be able to survive, while us common folk need to think about how to make ends meet.”
