Law Kar Ying Opens Up About Liza Wang’s Battles With Cancer And Their Super Sweet 32-Year Relationship
They celebrated their 11th wedding anniversary this year.
Hongkong celeb couple Law Kar Ying and Liza Wang famously dated for 21 years before tying the knot in 2009. And they've supported each other through sickness and health, and this recent interview Kar Ying did perfectly illustrates just how strong their relationship is.
The interviewer happened to be Kar Ying’s longtime actress-pal Kingdom Yuen, who took the opportunity to delve deeper into Kar Ying and Liza’s relationship.
Although the actor was a little embarrassed at first, even declining to answer questions related to their romance, he was no 'match' for the persistent Kingdom, so to speak.
When asked to reveal how he managed to “attract” Liza, Kar Ying said: “ I’m not too sure either, she’s never told me, so how would I know what she likes about me! I’m not attentive towards her, and I’m not super accommodating of her either. It’s normal for outsiders to think that she’s very fierce to me ‘cos she’s always very strict and has very exacting standards when it comes to work, so people think that she’s the same when it comes to me. But the truth is… well, it’s kinda like that [too]. This is so hard for me to say, it’s difficult to give an answer.”
He went on to say that he’s never expressed his love to Liza, and that he’s “not romantic enough”, even though he was able to recall, in detail, the first time they held hands.
“The first time we held hands was when we were crossing the road, we held hands for a bit, and then we let go, and then held hands again. We went to watch a movie after that, and she said she was scared, so she held my hand [again], and that’s roughly how it went down,” he revealed.
The couple has also gone through their fair share of tough times together, including Liza’s battles with thyroid and breast cancer, and Kar Ying’s liver cancer diagnosis in 2004.
When the topic changed to Liza’s battles with cancer, Kar Ying softened his tone considerably, and said: “Truthfully, Liza had fallen sick first. I remember she was having a meeting in China, when she suddenly called me and said that she wanted to return to Hongkong to visit the doctor. I went to [the airport] to pick her up, and that's where I found out that she needed surgery. She was very afraid, and was depending on me to stay strong by her side. [I told her], ’I’ll protect you, don’t be afraid, I’m here for you’, and she was pretty touched by that.”
And for a final dose of sweetness... On a recent episode of a show Liza was hosting, she read an excerpt from a love letter Kar Ying had written to her. And this particular sentence touched the hearts of her viewers.
“I only have half of my life left, and so do you. Together, we make up an entire life,” he wrote.
