When photos of former Hongkong actress Sharla Cheung delivering supplies to rural villagers were shared a few months ago, the internet went gaga over the 52-year-old’s ageless beauty. However, they’re suddenly singing a different tune after more recent snaps of the erstwhile screen siren, who left showbiz in the mid-noughties, were posted online.

Earlier this week, photos of Sharla (also known as Cheung Man or Zhang Min) visiting the Shaolin Temple in China led netizens to express their concern over how skinny she looks, especially her legs.

While Sharla undoubtedly looks very good for her age — remember, she’s in her 50s — and was dressed fashionably, all netizens could focus on was her weight… or lack thereof, rather.

Comments include: “She’s way too skinny”, “[Her legs are] thinner than my arms”, “She looks like a skeleton”, “How could a goddess become like this?”, “She’s so skinny that she’s a little out of shape”, and “Her legs look like chopsticks”. One media outlet also pointed out her slightly “sunken cheeks”.

This isn’t the first time Sharla’s looks have come under fire over the past couple of months. In November, she participated in a live stream and raised questions over her seemingly “different” appearance, which led to speculations that her photos are usually heavily edited with beauty apps.

In any case, it’s clear that celebs absolutely cannot win when it comes to strangers’ opinions on their weight. If they’re not being ripped apart for being too skinny like Sharla here, they’re being criticised for being too “fat” — just look at what happened to Liu Yifei, Jay Chou, K-pop star CL, Chinese actress Sandra Ma, and Lydia Sum’s daughter Joyce Cheng.
