Park Yoochun Said He Would Retire From Showbiz After His Drugs Scandal, But He’s Now Selling Photobooks And Fanclub Memberships

Too soon?

Korean singer-actor Park Yoochun got in major trouble last April when he admitted to purchasing methamphetamine with his ex-fiancé and using the drug on at least seven occasions. He was sentenced to 10 months jail with a two year-suspension. This means he only has to serve his jail sentence if he commits an offence while he's on probation. He was also fined 1.4mil won (S$1,600).

Prior to his sentencing, Yoochun had held a press conference where he denied all drug allegations and declared that he would “stop working as the celeb Park Yoochun and retire”.

Less than a month after his teary press con, his former agency, C-JeS Entertainment, terminated his contract as South Korea's National Forensic Service had obtained evidence that proved that the 33-year-old had abused drugs. They emphasised that Yoochun would keep to his word and retire from showbiz.

1 of 2 He's definitely not retiring

Unfortunately, it seems that he didn't quite keep to his word as he announced in March that he would be having an autograph event for those who purchase his photo book, which was priced at US$75 (S$110).

Netizens were outraged at his return to showbiz less than a year after he swore that he would retire. He was also lambasted for pricing the book at a premium, with netizens pointing out that Korean idol singers usually sell similar items at half the price.

“He’s problematic for going back on his word, but the people who continue to support him after everything are an even bigger problem,” one netizen wrote. Another added, “Seems like he’s run out of money so he has to use his fans as ATMs again.”

2 of 2 Why so expensive?

If that wasn’t enough, he announced this week that he would be setting up an official fan club, and that they would be selling annual memberships at 66,000 won (S$77). Those who become members will be given exclusive access to photos and videos of the singer, as well as priority ticketing access to his events, among other perks.

This once again caused an uproar, as he is charging double or more than what more famous personalities do. BTS, for example, charges 33,000 won (S$38) for an annual membership, which is similar to EXO’s annual membership fee of 35,000 won (S$40).

When Korean reporters tried to get a statement from his reps, the person who picked up responded, “I’m too busy right now to think [straight].”

O-kay.
