Remember '80s Taiwanese Singer Pan Meichen? Here’s What She’s Been Up To During The COVID-19 Pandemic
Who can forget her trademark mullet?
Remember androgynous Taiwanese singer Pan Meichen? The 51-year-old, who is known for her trademark mullet and ‘90s ballads like 'I Want to Have a Home', has been focusing on her music career in China in recent years.
According to the Meichen’s elder brother, songwriter Pan Xieqing, she has been based in China since October and has been shuttling between cities for performances.
However, due to the pandemic, her number of gigs have dropped by about 60 per cent, so Meichen, who also owns a music academy in Taichung, plans to use her to experience to help music influencers become singers.
Xieqing told Apple Daily that due to her frequent travels, Meichen has had to undergo the much-dreaded COVID-19 swab tests five times, she also has had to self-quarantine just as many times.
Instead of idling around while in self-isolation, Meichen made use of the time working out and now has six-pack abs. Or so her brother says, lah.
Meichen also takes safe-distancing measures very seriously. In addition to carrying around her own hand sanitiser and soap to disinfect her hands, she avoids eating out and prefers to cook her own meals at home.
At her performances, her fans would have to produce their negative polymerase chain reaction test certificates. She also frequently preaches the importance of COVID-19 prevention measures on stage.
Xieqing said that Meichen is very close to her parents and communicates with them via video call every day.
She will return to Taiwan at the end of the month for Chinese New Year, and plans to take her parents on a short trip before returning to China.
Meichen started her singing career in the late ‘80s and has released numerous hits, including 'The Ice That Refuses To Melt' and 'Regrets', over the years. Though her career started to wane in the late ‘90s, she has continued to perform regularly.
Known also for her androgynous image, there has long been speculation about her sexuality. In 2017, she came out as bisexual.
