Even though Selina Jen has recovered from her burn injuries from an explosion on the set of drama I Have a Date with Spring in 2010, her memories of the accident are still fresh. The Taiwanese singer-actress suffered third-degree burns on over half of her body, and today, is still trying to live with the physical and emotional scars.

The 39-year-old recently made an appearance at the 40th anniversary celebration of Taiwan’s Sunshine Social Welfare Foundation, a charity assisting burn victims during their rehabilitation. When speaking to the press, Selina, who is the foundation's spokesperson, said she had hoped to encourage victims to be strong, brave and optimistic.

However, when she saw their faces, she was reminded of what she went through a decade ago and so she couldn’t help but cry.

After the accident, the S.H.E member spent more than a year undergoing extensive rehabilitation for her face and body, a process she likened to “going to jail”.

“At that time, my physical and mental state were relatively negative. I couldn't help but think that I had committed some crime to be trapped in scars every day. The only thing I could do was rehabilitation. The same homework, [with] the same ineffective results. The wounds would split open and become blistered, and my body and mind were very frustrated,” shared Selina.

Despite the ordeal, it taught her to enjoy each day and to find joy in the simple things in life.

“Then I suffered too much sadness, negativity and despair. Now, it’s nothing to face a setback,” she said.

Though her scars have matured, she still experiences side effects. Whenever there is a sudden change in temperature, her body is unable to dissipate heat adequately, and she often experiences flashes of hot and cold.

It is like going through early menopause,” she explained.

As a result, even simple activities like hiking can be dangerous for her: I sweat more than others. When the wind blows, I get cold easily and my body temperature drops.

She adds that her metabolism has also been affected and that she bloats easily when she doesn’t drink enough water after eating salty food.
