Shu Qi, 44, and Stephen Fung, 46, tied the knot in 2016 but they almost never talk about each other in public. Well, at least to the media. Even when rumours of their marriage being on the rocks surface, the low-profile couple would simply keep mum.

In a recent interview with a Taiwanese magazine, Shu Qi gave a rare insight into her life as Mrs Stephen Fung.

“If you can’t find a suitable partner that you can’t spend the rest of your life with, rely on and compromise with, there’s honestly nothing wrong about staying single for life.”

She added that marriage isn’t just about the couple, but also about both of their families. “Before making an important decision, women have to think carefully about the consequences and whether she’s willing to go the distance for everyone around her husband. It’s not just your husband that you think about, but all your in-laws,” she pointed out. “I’m lucky to have met incredible in-laws who have let me live the life that I want.”

On Stephen, she declined to go into specifics and would only say, “I have some married friends who clash with their significant others about the most trivial of things. At the same time, they refuse to file for divorce. I think it’s important to make a choice between being unhappy with someone you might not love anymore or being lonely without a partner.”

Shu Qi and Stephen’s love story spanned over 20 years. They started off as close friends, and dated for four years before making a surprise announcement that they were married in September 2016. He was there for her throughout some of the toughest moments of her life, including the time she was harassed by Leon Lai’s fans when she was dating the Heavenly King.
