S Hotel is in the news again. The four-star Taipei establishment, which is owned by Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu and her husband Wang Xiaofei, has made a variety of headlines — mostly for not-so-nice reasons — over the three years it’s been in operation. And each time, the negative reports were shut down by a very vocal Xiaofei.

In the latest development, S Hotel recently announced that from March 27, they would be operating as the city’s fifth disease prevention hotel, giving those under COVID-19 self-isolation orders another place to stay.

According to a post on S Hotel’s Facebook page, their “quarantine package” comes with three meals a day, courtesy of their own S Restaurant & Bar, which will all be served with disposable tableware. There’s also free WiFi (of course), a 24-hour front desk, and professional waste management services.

Becoming a qualified disease prevention hotel is no mean feat, with many strict conditions to be met. For instance, the building must be located near an airport and be within range of five hospitals. The rooms should have their own self-contained air-conditioning units and no carpet, and all staff members are required to undergo rigorous training sessions on disease control and disinfection SOPs.

However, being holed up in S Hotel for two weeks won’t exactly come cheap. It costs NT$6,000 (S$284) a night to stay there, which comes up to a total of NT$84,000 (S$4,000) for a 14-day self-quarantine period.

Needless to say, some netizens have complained about this rate being way too expensive. However, there were also a number of them who came to S Hotel’s defense, saying that the price is expected for a high-end hotel in Taipei. Xiaofei and S Hotel were also praised for opening up their business to help contain the coronavirus outbreak.
