Song Joong Ki Is Tearing Down The House He Lived In With Ex-Wife Song Hye Kyo

Starting afresh, perhaps?

Song Joong Ki, 34, and Song Hye Kyo, 38 shocked just about everyone last June when they announced they were filing for divorce a mere one year and eight months after they tied the knot on October 31, 2017.

Before they got married, Song Joong Ki purchased a house in the upscale Itaewon neighbourhood, which many believed would be their love nest. At the time, reports stated that he paid KRW10bil (S$11.6mil) for the property.

Rumours of their marriage being on the rocks started months before they confirmed their split as neighbours claimed that neither actor was living in the house. It was later revealed that they separated in September 2018.

Korean media outlets confirmed that the house that the couple lived in will be torn down, with a new one built in its place. They also verified that the lot is still registered under Joong Ki's name, which could mean that he will live there once the mansion is rebuilt.

According to the sign in front of the site, the license obtained allows for a maximum of two storeys above ground and three underground levels to be constructed.

An insider who is privy to the reconstruction revealed that the permit was only obtained after months because of the number of surveys required. As the actor requested for three underground levels to be built, they would have to dig up more than five metres of soil.

The surveys also included checking the structural integrity of the properties on both sides of Joong Ki's house, as the excavation could possibly cause damage to the houses nearby.

The rebuilding permit was eventually issued on 16 November 2018, although construction only began last month. The reason for the delay is unknown, although some have speculated that it could have been because the couple was finalising the terms of their divorce, including how they would deal with the former pair's assets.
