Two years ago, Taiwanese director Doze Niu found himself in the news after a female staff member of a movie he was working on accused him of sexually assaulting her. According to reports, Doze had assaulted her after she attended a gathering held at his house.

Doze denied any wrongdoing, claiming that he thought the other party was aware of his intentions, and that he liked her romantically. In court, the director’s lawyer asked for a suspended sentence for the 53-year-old, sharing that Doze has since compensated the staff member with a seven-figure sum to “make up for her mental and physical distress”.

However, the prosecutor argued that Doze had abused his authority as a director to force his romantic advances on the staff member, who did not dare resist him as she was afraid of losing her job. The prosecutor also noted that Doze appeared unrepentant and refused to admit any wrongdoing. Further examination of the DNA evidence also showed that there was indeed evidence of sexual assault.

Witnesses also testified that the female staff member had displayed signs of rejection towards Doze, including how she had “turned her head away” and had “pushed [herself] away” from the director. Thus it was impossible for Doze to be “unaware of the female staff member’s intentions to reject him”.

Yesterday (Apr 14), the courts found Doze guilty of sexual assault and sentenced him to four years in prison. The courts also admonished Doze for making use of his status as a public figure to push his defense that the two parties were in a relationship.

The director has since shared that he intends to appeal against the sentence.

Doze, who got his start in showbiz as a child star in the '70s, is best known as the director behind the 2010 Taiwanese film, Monga.

This is also not the first time he has been accused of sexual misconduct. In 2007, it was reported that he had forcefully kissed actress Janine Chang on the neck on the set of TV drama, Wayward Kenting, which he directed.

He is also said to have forced actress Ke Huan Ru to appear nude for a scene in the 2007 movie What On Earth Have I Done Wrong?!. The movie was directed, co-written and produced by Doze, who also played the lead role. Last year, Huan Ru revealed in an interview that she has been left psychologically scarred by the experience.
