Chinese media tycoon Li Ruigang, who is the largest shareholder of TVB, recently gave an interview to share his thoughts about the Hongkong broadcasting station. And he did not hold back with the criticism.

Slamming the outdated shows, internal division, and management’s poor decisions (among many other problems), he kept saying how “dissatisfied” he is with the network’s performance, and that an urgent overhaul is needed if it wishes to stay afloat.

And actress Liza Wang, the undisputed ah jie of TVB who has been with the company for 50 years, agrees with him.

Speaking to Apple Daily, Liza admitted that she rarely watches TVB dramas these days and mostly just catches up with the news.

“All the afternoon and evening shows are about cooking, how boring!” she exclaimed. “It would be better to try new things and give audiences something fresh. It doesn’t matter whether it’s good or not, the most important thing is to try.”

She also said that TVB is outdated in many aspects, not just their programmes, and that there are a lot of areas that need to be improved. For instance, it needs to adapt to viewers who watch shows on their mobile phones and tablets.

The 73-year-old sure knows a thing or two about keeping up with the trends: She has her own YouTube channel, she’s been called “Hongkong’s Ariana Grande” for her bold style, and she came up with her own quirky way of tagging people in her Instagram posts.

Liza added that there are too many cliques within the organisation, which has resulted in many artistes missing out on valuable opportunities.

“In the past, it was up to casting to recommend artistes to the production team. Now, it’s the other way around, and they just sign on whoever they like,” she revealed. “In fact, the artiste and production departments should work closely together to be even more effective.”

It sounds harsh, but everything Liza said was done out of her love and support for TVB. She also believes that with Eric Tsang’s return to the station as Deputy General Manager, they might be able to bring many other big stars back to help.

“Everyone has to deal with this problem. The big boss just needs to speak up and older people need to upgrade themselves. I am also constantly learning.”
