Even though ’90s sex symbol Veronica Yip’s billionaire husband Jeffrey Wu has officially filed for bankruptcy, the couple is doing just fine. Or so the 53-year-old says.
Days after the bankruptcy news broke, Veronica gave an interview where she shared that there “hasn't been much changes in their lifestyle”, and that the family’s health is her top priority. The couple has two sons and a daughter.
“Our kids have their own funds, so I’m not too worried. Jeffrey doesn’t ask for much as well, it’s business as usual for us, the supermarkets are fine too and have resumed operations,” Veronica said in a phone interview.
The couple’s daughter, 21-year-old Victoria Wu, also mirrored Veronica’s sentiments, uploading a short post on her socials with the message: “Happiness is a state of mind”.
Jeffrey, who hails from Burma, runs a successful chain of supermarkets in New York’s Flushing neighbourhood. Apart from that, he also dabbles in a wide range of businesses, with dealings in real estate, hospitality, food & beverage, tourism and banking.
However, he filed for bankruptcy at the US Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of New York on July 8.
While it was previously reported that Jeffrey’s supermarket chain had to pay a fine of US$69.5K (S$96.7K) for overcharging on consumer goods like face masks, disposable gloves and tissues during the COVID-19 outbreak, Veronica denied that the fines were the catalyst for her husband’s bankruptcy filing.
Instead, the former actress revealed that it was 'cos the couple had taken out loans with a property loan company that “preys on Chinese property owners”.
“The [property loan] company looks for Chinese [property owners] in particular. The company thinks that the property owners aren’t familiar with the local laws, and sits ready to snap up their properties once they can’t keep up with the loan repayments,” Veronica said.
“Of course, Jeffrey isn’t willing to let the company do so, and he wants to protect his assets, so he filed for bankruptcy,” she continued.
Veronica continued on to share that losing face is the worst thing about filing for bankruptcy, and that her husband is particularly affected by this loss.
“Although this will affect our credibility, we have no choice. It might not sound nice or reflect well [on us], and it's frustrating, but it’s fine! We aren't unhappy, this is life after all. This is not a problem that we can’t solve, it’s not a matter of life and death, nor does it concern our health. We’re all continuing on with our lives. There will definitely be ups and downs in life, this will be a good [learning] experience for us,” she said.
