First Look At Marquee S'pore: We Went On A Ferris Wheel In A Club And It’s As Cool As We Imagined
“It’s designed to be the most Instagrammable club.”
A playground for adults! It’s just like Disneyland! It’s designed to be the most Instagrammable club!
These were some of the quips overheard at the Marquee Singapore media preview, where we got a sneak peek at the biggest club to open here in, like, forever. Taking over one of the theatres at Marina Bay Sands, the 2,300sqm mega club, which hails from New York, is a spectacular sight to behold, with a functioning eight-arm ferris wheel as the centrepiece of its cavernous three-storey premises.
Famed for throwing unabashedly immersive, festival-like soirees, Marquee draws in celebs by the throngs at its Big Apple, Las Vegas and Sydney venues. What it wants to do here in Singapore: bring partying to a whole new, carnival-esque level. From what we saw at the media preview, we can safely say that this is probably the most exciting opening on these shores yet.
With a diameter of 40m and a height of 30m, this remarkable structure isn’t just a ferris wheel — each of the eight pods double up as photo booths. And, yes, it's so massive, it can't fit into a single photo.
That’s the bright neon sign (though, yes, there’ll defo be big queues for this). Each pod accommodates up to four and each ride is about 10 minutes. As you gently sway your way to the top — 21m above the dance floor — you’re treated with panoramic views of the club. We’re told it doesn’t move as fast as a regular ferris wheel, but it definitely operates like one. There will be a small fee for the ferris wheel (exact price TBA), and this will be collected when you pay for cover charge at the door. For those who’ve scored tix for the opening weekend (Apr 12 and 13), good news: It’s free of charge this weekend.
E-mail it to yourself and humble-brag all you want on socials after. Pro-tip: It’s okay to have a drink or two before you hop on the ferris wheel, but if you’re too sloshed, the staff manning the ride may just politely suggest you skip this.
Co-owner Noah Tepperberg introduced Marquee Singapore as a playground for adults, and just so you know, he meant it quite literally. Just next to the ferris wheel entrance is the Sunny Slide Up, two massive spiralling slides that snake from the third floor to the ground level.
We hear one is more thrilling than the other, but where’s the fun in it if we told you which one? Similar to The Big Q, staff manning Sunny Slide Up will turn guests away if they appear too intoxicated.
Unlike most clubs, there is no dedicated VIP area. Instead, VIP tables are scattered all around the club.
Some tables can accommodate up to 40 people, and these are the largest tables ever seen at a Marquee club globally.
“The club was designed to be the most Instagrammable one ever. Even if you don’t have a table or a booth, you can come and have fun at the open spaces,” says Noah. Which is why nooks like this arty mirrored wall, a masterpiece by local art collective Ripple Root (the same duo behind the famous whimsical pastel wall mural at an alleyway on Keong Saik Road), have been created.
About 20 bartenders are serving up drinks at the club’s four bars at any given night. The most impressive one is this elegant, soaring bar with giant peacocks perched in gilded cages, lovingly watching as you order your poison of choice.
Taking centrestage on the dancefloor is a massive backdrop for the DJ booth. The world’s highest definition live video shows, filmed with 8K video technology (and you thought your 4K cam was fab?), will be screened on the ginormous 20m high LED screen. The trippy visuals on these fancy-pants screens (which extends out from the DJ booth and meanders around the club) also make for a great selfie background. Psst, go to upstairs and traipse along the platform right in front of the video wall for the best selfie spot.
The kaleidoscopic entrance that probably wouldn’t look out of place in a sci-fi flick.
Noah Tepperberg (left), 43, and Jason Strauss (right), 45, first met when they were in high school at a copy shop while they were printing out flyers for parties they were throwing for school friends. Yes, millennials, there was a time before the Internet when people had to snail mail or fax party invites. “We always joke that nightclub years are like dog years — every year is like seven years of your life,” Noah muses.
The line-up for the first three weekends are jam-packed with the biggest names in the industry. Tiesto helms the decks after the red carpet opening on Apr 12, while Afrojack takes over on Apr 13. Above & Beyond and Steve Aoki will spin on Apr 19 and 20 respectively. The man of the night on Apr 26 is Kaskade, and on Apr 27, Showtek.
