So embarrassing! Vanness Wu laughed at for bringing up SNSD's Tiffany and Sooyoung in front of estranged ex-member Jessica Jung

Next time you want to make small talk with someone, make sure you do your research first.

Otherwise, you're gonna end up like Taiwanese star Vanness Wu, 44, who got into a really awkward situation with ex-SNSD member Jessica Jung, 34.

Um.. he just had to mention Tiffany and Sooyoung...

Last week, Vanness bumped into Jessica at an event for luxury brand Givenchy and their interaction was caught on camera.

He was seen telling her that they have "mutual acquaintances" before mentioning someone named "Reggie". Jessica then responded by saying "Ah, Reggie" with a hearty laugh.

However, things got a little awkward when Vanness brought up their other mutual, um, friends.

"And Tiffany and Sooyoung, I met them a few years ago," he said confidently, namedropping Jessica's former SNSD (aka Girls' Generation) bandmates.

Upon hearing their names, Jessica's expression changed before she replied: "Oh... okay..." with an uneasy smile. 

For those unaware, like Vanness, there have been rumours that Jessica is not on good terms with the rest of SNSD after she left the group in 2014. But more on this later. 

Geez.

It appears that Vanness had no idea he made a boo-boo. 

After the event, Vanness took to his Instagram Stories to share a picture he took with Jessica. That would be totally fine if he had not, of all things, added SNSD's 2009 song 'Gee' as the background music. 

Even netizens could feel the awkwardness through their screens

Netizens were surprised to see Vanness make such a blunder, with some saying that they felt second-hand embarrassment for him.

"Does he really not know?," asked one netizen while another lamented: "This video is so awkward that I don't want to watch it."

Back when Jessica was still in SNSD

So here's the deal with SNSD, in case you're like Vanness and completely clueless with what happened.

It all started when Jessica was allegedly forced to leave the group back in 2014.

At that time, Jessica said she was "told to quit [SNSD] based on improper reasons", a decision that left her "perplexed and puzzled".

In response to Jessica's accusations, SNSD's agency SM Entertainment issued an official statement claiming that the singer had requested to leave the group because she couldn't juggle SNSD's activities and her own fashion line Blanc & Eclare. 

Jessica did not agree with the agency's statement about her dismissal. 

She rebutted: "I have received great pain and cannot hide my sadness when I was asked by the agency and my fellow members, whom I've spent 15 years with, putting in all my passion and efforts, to leave Girls' Generation just because I am starting my own business."
