Mediacorp host Yang Guang Ke Le was eliminated in the second quarter-final of SPOP WAVE! after her team, which consists of former NOC artiste Rao Zijie and Ah Boys To Men star Ridhwan, lost narrowly in the team battle.

The chirpy 24-year-old, who got her start in showbiz as a getai singer and was in the top five of 2018 singing competition Getai Challenge, spoke to 8days.sg a day after her elimination, cracking jokes at her own expense and calling the entire experience a “very happy one”.

8 DAYS: Sorry to hear about your elimination! How did you feel when Junyang called out your name?

YANG GUANG KE LE: Honestly, I was very happy just to have been part of the competition. Since it’s a contest, it’s inevitable that someone gets kicked out. I was eliminated because I’m not good enough at certain things, and I’m sure that the judges saw that.

Did you feel that you weren’t able to perform as well during the last episode because it was a team event?

The chemistry between the three of us was very good and I felt that we did pretty well during the team round. I respect the judges’ decision, but I’m still very satisfied with how we did during the performance. So no, I don’t think that affected me at all! (laughs)

Did your mentor Junyang tell you why he chose to eliminate you?

I feel that it would have hurt him regardless of who he chose to eliminate. During practice, he did mention my strengths and weaknesses. I feel that he has his own reasons for choosing me. I’m also very aware that I’m not better than everyone else. That’s why I didn’t feel the need to ask him ‘Why me?’. I respect his decision.

[After the interview with Ke Le, 8days.sg spoke to Junyang who told us that he eliminated Ke Le based on the judges’ comments, feedback and remarks towards her on that particular day. He added that he would be indirectly ignoring them if [he] were to make [the call] based on [his] own reasoning . That’s not right either. I have to respect the judges and not jump to my own conclusions, he said.

  • 2 of 3 Ke Le is part of the cast of Jack Neo's upcoming Ah Boys spin-off  Ah Girls Go Army

You've been really busy filming Ah Girls Go Army. How’s everything been so far?

We’re having a lot of fun and I love the team spirit that we have. We’re only on day 12 so we haven’t gotten to the physically challenging bits yet. Things might change if you ask me the same question in like a week (chortles).

How prepared are you for those?

I’ve been cycling and doing yoga on a regular basis so I think I’m okay physically wise. But I think it’ll be okay since I’m young!

Your character is called Princess See…

(Laughs) Thankfully, I’m not the uppity kind of Princess that’s very annoying (laughs). My character is pretty slapstick but is also a bit of a crybaby. I had to continue crying during some scenes so that they could get all the camera angles that they need.

How did you get in the mood to cry?

I think about how really want to go home (sighs loudly). [Ed: Ke Le is Malaysian and her family is in JB] During every crying scene, I think of how pitiful I am ‘cos I’m not be able to go home and that gets me in the mood to cry (chuckles).

I really love my family and all of us are very close. Due to COVID, I haven’t been home for two years so I really want miss everyone. The rules are still pretty strict and I don’t think I’ll have time to make a trip back for now.

  • 3 of 3 Ke Le's mum has always had her back

Since the VTL (land) has been confirmed, you could make a trip home.

I really want to go home but work comes first. I’m not sure if I would be able to make it there and back if I only have one or two days off. If the schedule is too tight, I might end up becoming even more tired from the trip which would then affect my job.

I think that my mum would be the first one to rush over the Causeway if they allow [short-term pass holders] to make use of the VTL. I’m the one she dotes on the most and she used to follow me everywhere — she was the one who came with me to Singapore, go with me to my getai shows and other performances. We thought we would only be separated for two weeks but it’s been two years. We can only accept reality but we miss each other like crazy.

I want to go home and see everyone, including my sister’s baby. I haven’t seen my seven-month-old nephew yet! I’d like stay as long as I can in Malaysia but I would also be happy with just two full days there.
