SINGAPORE — A 54-year-old woman was on Monday (Oct 28) charged with the murder of a 63-year-old man in a Housing and Development Board flat in Ang Mo Kio.
Chinese national Wang Shuzhen allegedly killed Teh Hock Pine, a Singaporean, in a third-storey unit at Block 633, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6 sometime between 5am and 6.02am on Sunday.
If convicted, Wang could face the death penalty.
Wang appeared expressionless in court when her charge was read to her.
She will return to court on Nov 18, following a three-week psychiatric assessment at Changi Prison.
In a statement on Sunday, the police said that preliminary investigations showed that Wang and Teh knew each other. TODAY understands that they were a couple.
On Sunday, Teh was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene after the police were alerted to the case of unnatural death at about 5.45am.
Neighbours living on the second floor below the unit told reporters that they heard sounds of struggle at about 5.30am, before Wang was taken out in handcuffs by police officers at around 7am. According to the neighbours, Wang is “big-sized” at around 1.7m to 1.75m tall, and is bigger and taller than Teh.
One of the neighbours said in Mandarin she had seen the pair around with a young child, and described them as a “very loving couple” who frequently patronised the nearby market. Apart from Wang and Teh, the neighbours also said that there were three others living in the unit — the couple's granddaughter and her parents. But the neighbours have not seen the occupants recently.
Wang was not the only one charged with murder on Monday.
In an unrelated case, a 22-year-old man was charged following his arrest on Sunday after he allegedly murdered his mother and grandmother at Block 7A Commonwealth Avenue. The incident saw two others sent to the hospital.
