Harry Potter's magical world comes to life with new exhibition here

SINGAPORE — It’s been a good year for Potterheads, isn’t it?

SINGAPORE — It has been a good year for Potterheads, hasn't it?

First, there was the launch of stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in London in July, which was swiftly followed by the launch of an official script book of the same name. Then, there is Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them to look forward to — a spin-off from the Harry Potter series based on J K Rowling’s book of the same name — which is hitting theatres here on Nov 17.

Now, there is a new Harry Potter exhibition in town, and they are showing, well, stamps.

Titled Collecting Magic: From Stamps to Wands, the exhibition, which is organised by the Singapore Philatelic Museum (SPM) and which runs from Wednesday (Nov 2) to June next year, will bring together a comprehensive collection of Harry Potter stamps from around the world, including countries such as Singapore, Taiwan, Japan, United Kingdom and the United States.

Examples of scenes in the stamps include Harry Potter garbed in dress robes for Yule Ball or Potter riding on a broomstick in the Triwizard Tournament (both from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire).

The first licensed Harry Potter stamps in the world, which surprisingly, came from Asia, will also be available for viewing. Featuring scenes from the third film of Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, these stamps have been flown here from Taiwan specially for the exhibition.

Noting the renewed interest in Harry Potter, the exhibition’s curator Mishelle Lim Jie Hui, 36, said: “Harry Potter is a global phenomenon, it crosses culture and generations. There’s a huge fan base in Singapore and you can really find anything on stamps, including Harry Potter.”

So the museum decided to focus on Harry Potter for their show, added Lim during a media preview of the exhibition today.

The museum’s general manager Tresnawati Prihadi added: “The magic of collecting touches everyone — from the collector to the admirer. There is delight and joy when you acquire something you love, and share your collection and experience with others.”

She added that the exhibition “honours this tradition of collecting, particularly in the area of philately. Postage stamps, alongside community contributed collectibles, help make the Harry Potter experience more tangible and real for visitors.”

Besides stamps, a selection of movie memorabilia and collectibles on loan from local collectors have also been included in the exhibition, such as minature figurines of Fawkes and Nagini.

A life-sized figurine of Dobby the House Elf will be on display, and visitors will also get treated to a showcase of the Harry Potter Wizard’s Collection box set, which is an extensive set released in 2012 that contains 31-disc sets with more than four hours of never-before-seen material and memorabillia such as a horcrux, a map of Hogwarts and other props and posters.

To make the experience even more magical, interactive multimedia exhibits have been introduced to accompany the exhibition. Specially curated by a team of students from Nanyang Polytechnic’s School of Interactive & Digital Media, visitors can visit the wand interactive station and interact with the screen by waving a wand. They can also learn about the meaning of “spells” at the unique heat-sensitive stamp display with a touch of a button. We dare say Potter fans will be fascinated by this nifty creation.

There are also multiple chances for photo opportunities. Visitors can pretend to push a trolley through Platform 9 3/4 at “King’s Cross Station”, or ride on a broomstick with Hogwarts Castle as the backdrop.

Lim says she hopes to attract 80,000 visitors by the end of the exhibition. “I want to bring out the joy, the magic in collecting, whether it’s collectible or stamps,” she said.

“We hope that visitors, when they visit (the exhibition), would want to revisit, rewatch or reread Harry Potter. And who knows, maybe even start collecting stamps?” Lim quipped.

Collecting Magic: From Stamps to Wands, which opens from 10am to 7pm daily, will run at Singapore Philatelic Museum from Nov 2 to June 2017. Admission to the exhibition is free for all Singaporeans and Permanent Residents.
