Bravo to these brave and bold celebrity mums

SINGAPORE — Many celebrities are bucking the trend these days. Instead of being young mums and starting a family when they are in their twenties or early thirties, some are choosing to have children when they are in their forties, despite the risks it may involve. As we salute their bravery, here are some who have gone against societal conventions.

Leelian Chua, 42

The Love 97.2 radio DJ dropped a double bomb on Dec 20 when she announced that she had tied the knot with her beau, to be identified only as Mr Lee, after dating for less than a year, and is already three-months pregnant. The DJ shared that her first trimester has been difficult, as she had no appetite because of gastric pains, felt lethargic in the day and was unable to sleep well at night. Despite the challenges and struggles of a high-risk pregnancy, she shared that she would still be willing to have a second baby. “My siblings were a lot older than me, so I felt quite lonely then, but conceiving at my age might bring a lot of complications, so we will let nature take its course,” she said.

Fann Wong, 45

The beautiful actress gave birth to her first child, Zed Lee, at the age of 43. With her pregnancy happening only after five years into her marriage with fellow actor Christopher Lee, we cannot say that we were not surprised when Wong made the official announcement in 2014. Well past the age of a low-risk pregnancy, the bold mother is still looking to expand the brood, and she is currently striving hard with her husband to give two-year-old Zed a sibling.

Zoe Tay, 48

Raised in a big family (she is the sixth child at home), Tay, often referred to as “Ah Jie”, loves children and once had a goal of having four kids at home. For her last and most recent pregnancy at the age of 42 in 2010, the Queen of Caldecott Hill gave birth to her third son Nathan Chionh prematurely. Despite being an experienced mother from two previous pregnancies, Tay’s high-risk pregnancy took a toll on her and she experienced bleeding before deciding to undergo Caesarean section.

Carole Lin, 43

At the age of 42, Lin’s gynaecologist told her that the chances of getting pregnant at her age would be slim. Undaunted, the actress challenged her body to get pregnant within six months, and she eventually succeeded. Although Lin had a smooth-sailing pregnancy, she suffered from postpartum depression after a traumatic delivery. Still, she has since recovered fully, thanks to the support of her husband, David Lim. The couple’s only child, Brooklyn Lim, is now one year old and has her own Instagram account that her father uses sometimes to document her milestones. MELINDA WOO/TOGGLE
