Local celebs’ top tips for Pokemon Go

Fiona Xie, Shane Pow, Ya Hui and more on how to outwit, outlast and outpoke the game

SINGAPORE — Everybody and their grandmother are playing Pokemon Go, the digital epidemic for which there is no foreseeable cure. Among those who have fallen victim to the game are local celebrities including, but certainly not limited to, Fann Wong, Ian Fang, Dennis Chew, Andie Chen and Belinda Lee.

The nice thing about the Pokemon hunt, though, is how it can bring people together, even total strangers who happen to converge at a hot spot. And doesn’t it make you feel closer to your favourite celeb when you know that he or she is going through the same Poke-struggles as you? Our stars aren’t selfish, either. Here, they share their top tips on how to beat Pokemon at their own game.

Fiona Xie

You should buy a (robotic vacuum cleaner) Roomba and stick the phone on it. It will be like you’re walking. Or stick it to the fan. It can hatch your eggs faster. I haven’t tried those, but I read it online and apparently those are Pokemon hacks. And apparently there’s this cover for your phone with a line, so your accuracy is better when you throw the balls. If you have a 4D printer, you can print it.

Shane Pow

Always let other people use their lures so you don’t need to waste your own lures. I found that the CBD area has a lot of lures and they are all very close to one another. You can just go up and down. I did that once because I was there for a meeting. And always bring a portable charger because it takes up a lot of battery.

I do not ever, ever use my Stardust because I will be needing it in the future, I reckon. Because as long as you level up your character, you’re going to be catching higher-level Pokemon, so it’s no use. And the kind of Pokemon that you want to keep are probably the weaker ones such as the Magikarp because they can evolve to the much faster and stronger Gyarados in the long run. I have not gone for a battle or gym yet because I just want to concentrate on trying to level up my character. I have been following Pokemon videos and I have been quite inspired by them. I have launched my first video on my YouTube channel, sharing my Pokemon adventures.

Ya Hui

Just catch lor. Whenever I see a cute one that I don’t have, I just catch it. I was in Thailand when the game started, and there are many rare Pokemon in Thailand. All I had to do was stay in one spot and different ones would come. So now, I’m like, ‘See? You don’t have this one, right?’ And I heard you can set your GPS to a different location to catch different Pokemon. I wouldn’t cheat. I’m a very upright person. (Laughs)

To level up faster, you can collect a lot of pidgeys and evolve them into Pidgeotto. Collect a lot of them, turn on your lucky egg and evolve them. I’m a professor in Pokemon because I’ve played the game since I was young and I know every single Pokemon.

Catch everything you see. Because that basically helps you to level up. And if you are in an area where there’s a lure, stick around, turn on your incense, turn on your lucky eggs and you get more experience points there.
