Muttons win Best Radio Show again

SINGAPORE – It seems that two is a lucky number for Singapore’s most popular radio DJs when it comes to winning awards.

SINGAPORE – It seems that two is a lucky number for Singapore’s most popular radio DJs when it comes to winning awards.

At the MediaCorp Radio Awards 2013 on Friday night (Nov 15), popular radio duo The Muttons – Justin Ang and Vernon A – picked up the Best Radio Show award again for the third time running. Ang was also a double-winner, taking the Most Popular Radio Personality award, besting his 987FM partner, who won the same award last year.

Ang said the award was a wonderful affirmation of what he’s done over the past 15 years, but that he was expecting Vernon to win the Most Popular award again, before cheekily adding: “But obviously, I’m much better.”

“It’s nice to know that people actually appreciate our hard work and it makes us want to go higher and get back on air, like, right now,” said Vernon of their joint win.

Will they ever be sick of winning the same award time and again? “It’s never the same. Every year, winning is different, it’s fun and it just feels fantastic,” said Ang.

Other DJs who also bagged two awards included Oli 96.8FM’s Vimala and Warna 94.2FM’s A B Shaik, both of whom picked up awards for Radio Personality of the Year: Media’s Choice and Most Popular Radio Personality for their respective stations.

“I’m really glad people really love listening to me, I feel like I need to do more for them and give them quality programmes, to entertain them, to educate them, and to be a better radio presenter in the future,” said Vimala.

A B Shaik had a diferent take: “I’m not popular, I’m just known to the public”.

Another double winner was Rohini Ramnathan of said the Expat Radio 96.3XFM, Masti, who took home the award for Most Creative Radio Trailer (Expatriate Programming) and Best Newcomer. “I totally wasn’t expecting to win. I mean, I was up against DeeKosh (of 987FM), and I’m a huge fan of him myself. For me, it’s a big, big deal. I don’t know what to say - I’m tongue-tied,”

Meanwhile, Love 97.2FM’s Chen Biyu picked up the award for Breakthrough Radio Personality, one of two new award categories (the other is Best Radio Promotions). “I think every day should be a breakthrough. And being a radio DJ to me is just being a student and learning. I don’t usually come for award shows and my boss told me if I went to this award show tonight, I would make a breakthrough, and here I am”.

The Lifetime Achievement Award went to Suharti Bte Ali (Warna 94.2FM), who was awarded for her contribution and dedication to the radio industry over the past 36 years working as a radio presenter, TV host, scriptwriter and song writer. “I feel like I’m alive and present, and that whatever I’ve done before is being appreciated and recognised,” she said. “When I first started I was 20, and now, next week I’m going to be 57. And just last night a young girl said to me, ‘I don’t listen to radio but I remember you and I’ll always remember you.’ That made my day.”

The bi-annual radio awards show handed out over 20 awards. This year, the public voted for their favourite DJs for the Best Radio Personality of each radio station through Facebook and SMS voting.
