SINGAPORE - In The Huntsman: Winter’s War, the sequel to 2012’s Snow White And The Huntsman, English actress Emily Blunt plays Freya, whose icy powers are uncovered after her sister, the evil Queen Ravenna (played by Charlize Theron), betrays her.

With her newfound abilities, Freya builds her own sub-zero kingdom and raises an army of Huntsmen far to the north, all while flaunting an enviable wardrobe fit for the Ice Queen she is. But of course, she isn’t the first ice queen we’ve encountered. Here are other fabulous “ice queens” in real life and on the silver screen we like.

QUEEN ELSA (FROM FROZEN)

You knew you’d find her on this list, wouldn’t you? Voiced by Idina Menzel, and loosely based on the titular character in Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairy tale The Snow Queen, Elsa spends years trying to conceal her cryokinetic powers after her sister Anna gets injured, only to unwittingly unleash them during an emotional outburst at her coronation. She runs away to the mountains, where she builds herself an ice palace (and glittering gown) entirely from scratch, all the while singing one of the most popular Disney songs (Let It Go) in recent history. Regardless of how you feel about the song, you have to admit that the scene is beautiful, majestic and makes you wish you had her ice-creating skills.

RUI EN

The Star Awards All-Time Favourite Artistes’ newest member is no stranger to being scrutinised for her aloof default expression (remember the hoo-ha she caused with her “black face” at last year’s Star Awards?), which have led her to be crowned Caldecott Hill’s very own resident ice queen. However, Rui En is actually a lot warmer than her public image makes her out to be (and she smiles, too). Plus, we don’t think her massive and extremely dedicated fan base, RBKD, would be half as committed as they are to her if she were even close to being a mean, frosty diva.

JESSICA AND KRYSTAL JUNG

Not only do good looks run in the Jung family, a cold “resting b***h face” and straightforward personality do too, leading both sisters to be christened “ice princesses”. They’ve even given explanations for their unapproachable facade: Krystal doesn’t like her smile and Jessica believes all girls should have an image that isn’t “easily reachable”. However, they remain top favourites among K-pop fans - Jessica drew enormous crowds during her two solo appearances in Singapore post-SNSD; and Krystal is one of the most popular members of her band f(x).

KIM YUNA

This is a true Queen of the Ice. The smiley-eyed figure skater brought glory and gold to South Korea during her competing days, during which she smashed all kinds of world records. Sadly, she retired from the rink in 2014, and said in an interview a few months later that she is “mentally more at ease”. In addition to her athletic achievements, Yuna has graced magazine covers, was the face of Samsung’s touchscreen haptic phone and even had a short stint as a singer, with several albums and singles to her name (including collaborations with the likes of K-pop stars IU and Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon). Forbes magazine once listed her as one of the highest-paid female athletes in the world, with annual earnings of US$9.7 million (S$13 million).

FAYE WONG

Don’t expect cheery fan service from the “Ice Queen of Mandopop”. When she arrived in Singapore for her concert in 2011, she completely ignored the small crowd of admirers who had gathered to welcome her, Those who have been to any of her concerts will also know that they are largely very non-interactive affairs, with no jokes or banter that is typical of most gigs these days. At her Singapore show, for example, she only said, “thank you” eight times and abruptly left the stage at the end of the set without even a goodbye.

ANNA WINTOUR

The US Vogue editor-in-chief is one of the most revered figures in the fashion industry. She is also reputed to be a stone cold iron lady a la Meryl Streep’s fearsome character in The Devil Wears Prada (whom many believe was inspired by Wintour) and just as terrifying to work with. Whether all the stories of her intimidating work style are true or exaggerated, the fact remains that she is powerful, respected and so chic.

QUEEN JADIS

In the film version of The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe, the White Witch (played by Tilda Swinton) was ruthless, scheming and responsible for inflicting a century-long winter on the World of Narnia, but you can’t deny that she looked absolutely fabulous, thanks to her magical wardrobe. According to the film’s costume designer, the specially-created fabrics for her dresses were directly inspired by ice. Add a crown made from eight-inch-high icicles to her hair, lush fur stoles and a formidable wand used to turn poor subjects to stone, and you have one terrifying - but also terribly stylish - ice queen.
