SINGAPORE — A new streaming service, Fox+, gives mobile users access to shows, live sports and movies seen on the Fox channels here.
Available via Singtel’s Cast streaming service, Fox+ — which can be viewed via an app on mobile phones, tablets and computers — is the latest addition to an increasingly crowded scene dominated by American bigwig, Netflix. On-demand streaming service, Amazon Prime, also made its entry here in December.
The Fox+ service is available only to those who have a mobile, TV or broadband plan with Singtel. It will be available to those with StarHub subscriptions in the coming months.
The selling point for Fox+ is that one can binge-watch entire seasons of shows such as Fresh off the Boat, Empire, The Walking Dead and 24: Legacy, since back-episodes and full seasons are available. Subscribers will also be able to stream the latest episodes at the same time that they air in the United States.
Mr Zubin Gandevia, president of FOX Networks Groups Asia, said that Fox movies seen here will also be released one year ahead from other subscription services.
“The first time you will see those movies in any subscription environment after they come into the cinema will be on Fox+,” Mr Gandevia said. He was not able to say exactly how soon a movie would be available after its cinema run. But hit-movie Train to Busan, which premiered in August last year, is already available on the streaming and TV platforms.
Fox+ will light up for sports fans, who will be able to watch the Formula One Spanish Grand Prix this month and tennis tournament Wimbledon next month on the service.
One area that Fox+ cannot beat Netflix or Amazon Prime is in terms of price. Netflix services cost S$10.98 to S$16.80, and Amazon Prime has an introductory rate of US$2.99 (S$4.25) per month for the first six months. It costs US$5.99 (S$8.50) per month thereafter.
In comparison, Singtel is offering Fox+ at an introductory rate of S$19.90 per month to those who are signed up for broadband or mobile plans with the operator. A Singtel TV user can enjoy Fox+ for S$12.90 per month. The promotional prices are applicable for a year. But once that expires, Fox+ will cost S$24.90 per month.
Asked about competition from more established players, Mr Gandevia said: “We believe there’s a market here because our channels do very well. More and more people want to have the option to see great television products on any screen, any time and anywhere.”
There is some content, such as The Simpsons and Family Guy, seen on Singtel and StarHub here, that Fox+ does not yet have. A Fox spokesman said that, while the network will work to get the latest shows onto Fox+, “we don’t have any plans on this that we can announce”. Sonia Yeo
The Fox+ app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Singtel customers can subscribe to Fox+ on Cast at all Singtel shops and exclusive retailers, or at www.cast.sg. A 30-day free trial is available.
