The yin and yang of Katy Perry

CANCUN — She has already conquered the pop music market — equalling Michael Jackson for having the most No 1 singles from an album — and now Kathryn Elizabeth Hudson, aka Katy Perry, would like to add “actress” to her resume. Or so it seems.

CANCUN — She has already conquered the pop music market — equalling Michael Jackson for having the most No 1 singles from an album — and now Kathryn Elizabeth Hudson, aka Katy Perry, would like to add “actress” to her resume. Or so it seems.

The pop superstar has already dabbled with acting in her music videos, and has a movie to her name, the concert film, Part Of Me. And now she’s back on the big screen, voicing Smurfette in Smurfs 2.

“(I would like) to go into this world a bit more of a challenge,” said the 28-year-old, who reportedly said she would like to follow in the footsteps of Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy or Rebel Wilson. “But I love the challenge and it’s a nice way to test the waters in having a film career.

“I think it’s a natural process with animation and voicing if you’re coming from using your voice as an instrument — and it’s your job, anyway,” she added. “So it seems like a natural transition. It was a great way to kind of figure out if I want to do film. “

With Perry’s larger than life cartoony pop superstar image, it only seemed natural her first movie role would be an animated one. The Smurfs, the 2011 film based on the little blue cartoon characters created by Belgian comic artist Peyo was such a worldwide box office success that a sequel was inevitable.

Thus, Perry, Neil Patrick Harris and Hank Azaria are back for a second round. And this time Perry has bigger role in the story. See, Smurfette, isn’t quite a True Blue Smurf. She is, in fact, a Naughty, the creation of the evil wizard Gargamel (Azaria). And the wiz kidnaps her in order to get the formula that Papa Smurf used to turned her blue.

Still, Perry liked being the only female in the village. “She’s the only female Smurf so she gets a lot of extra attention!” she squealed with a tinkly laugh. “And me being a middle child in real life, the extra attention is a very fun thing to have.”

But is there a little bit of bad in the bubbly and sugary confection that is the Katy Perry that the world sees? After all, all good girls have a bit of bad in them, right?

“Yes! I mean that’s the yin and yang of life right?” she said. “Of course I do (have a bad side). It makes the good so much better.”

And just how much of the real Katy Perry is in Smurfette? “Well, I think she’s about 85 per cent Smurfette and 15 per cent Katy. Just enough!”

Still, with Perry doing family movies like The Smurfs series, the inevitable question of having kids had to pop up. “I like to babysit them and give them back,” she quipped, before adding that she would probably want have her own kids one day.

“I’m excited about that future. I’ll probably do that when I’m working less, so I can focus (on the children),” she said. “It’s very important because from birth to five years old is when they develop their whole character so I want to be around that as much as possible.”

And if you’re wondering if she’s still smarting from her abrupt divorce from Russell Brand, you needn’t worry. “I’m doing very well. The thing about me is I’m a Scorpio and triple Scorpio at that! A Scorpio tends to rise above the Phoenixes. And I think being a triple Scorpio, I do that three times as well!”

MOVIE OPENING DATE: The Smurfs 2 is in cinemas now.
