SINGAPORE — Il Divo and Broadway? Why not?

That’s what you can expect when the vocal quartet return to Singapore on March 17 for their show, A Musical Affair. Yes, the group, which are celebrating their 10th anniversary, will sing popular pieces from popular Broadway musicals including Phantom Of The Opera, West Side Story and Carousel.

“It’s a brand new show for us because we will be presenting our latest album, A Musical Affair, as well as other songs from the musical theatre repertoire, so it’s pretty much a complete departure from any other Il Divo show we’ve ever done,” said American tenor David Miller.

Show tunes, he said, were on the natural trajectory of the group — which also comprises Swiss tenor Urs Buhler, French pop singer Sebastien Izambard and Spanish baritone Carlos Marin. “I think between the four of our voices and the colours that we have to offer; and the necessity of the dramatic impulse with our music — because we always take these pop songs and turn them into a much more dramatic approach than what they were originally intended for — I think the progression was a natural one.”

But hardcore Il Divo fans needn’t worry — the boys won’t be doing any jigs. “It’s still going to be an Il Divo show. The way in which we interact with music theatre is the same as we would interact with other songs,” assured Miller. “And the way we present the show is still very much Il Divo. But the repertoire and content and emotion of music theatre is a lot more akin to our operatic backgrounds. So it’s music we can much more easily connect with.”

Although, there is the slight danger of Miller busting out the jazz hands. “I remember on the very last performance of the Broadway run — which was the first inception of this tour — in the finale, I decided to put jazz hands in. I think I confused most people. It didn’t really sit or belong anywhere. Everyone was kind of looking at me, like, ‘What is he doing?’”

But here’s the big question: Who is the most theatrical among the four Il Divo guys? “I would say Carlos because he’s been singing since he was six and he’s been in operas and music theatre. He’s been performing on the stage the longest, for sure. And he definitely has a flare for the dramatic, with his Spanish fuego,” Miller said.

“He has a theatrical nature. He’s very animated and emotional as well. And, being Spanish, if we ever get into any sort of disagreements in terms of maybe the musical direction, his approach is definitely ... let’s say, the most boisterous.”

But has it ever descended into fisticuffs in the Il Divo boardroom? “Not for a very long time!” Miller quipped.

Still, for the 40-year-old, musical theatre is a return to his performing roots: Miller used to perform in high school musicals when he was a teen. “When I got to college, I fell in love with opera (which became) my main passion all the way up until getting into Il Divo. It feels like going all the way back to the beginning for me,” he said.

Il Divo: A Musical Affair is on March 17, 8.30pm at The Star Theatre. Tickets from S$98 to S$278 from SISTIC.
