Better Together (Fifth Harmony) | 3/5
SINGAPORE — This group was put together by Simon Cowell, after the five girls — Ally Brooke Hernandez, Normani Hamilton, Dinah Jane Hansen, Camila Cabello and Lauren Jauregui — didn’t quite make it as individuals in their X Factor pursuits. Sounds familiar? Oh yes, didn’t a group called One Direction have similar beginnings? But the Cowell touch has worked again. After all, Fifth Harmony has over 1,000,000 Twitter followers — and 1,000,000 fans can’t be wrong, right? The group has made big play about being nice to all their fans (all of them are beautiful and special and unique and Fifth Harmony loves them all no matter what), but how will the fans take to this EP, which is a sampling of what the girls can do, music-wise? Thanks to careful song choices, this release is quite palatable, managing to land in the Top 10 on the Billboard charts and No 2 in iTunes (blocked out from top spot by Katy Perry’s album). Of course, the girls’ voices still need a little bit of work. However, all the songs here — the punchy title track, the disco-infused Don’t Wanna Dance Alone, the weepy Who Are You, and the pop-perfect Miss Movin’ On and Leave My Heart Out Of This — are reminiscent of every single pop hit in the last five years, bearing shades of Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry or Christina Aguilera. This, by no means, indicates their ability. Every other group out there is putting out similar-sounding releases. But Fifth Harmony does have a little thing called “promise”, and a big thing called “Simon Cowell’s backing” behind it. No, it’s not the best EP in the world, but it suffices as a toehold. Will Fifth Harmony get as big as One Direction? Maybe not. But they’re definitely going in the right direction.
