Music review: English Electric - OMD | 4/5

In 2010, English synth-pop pioneers Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (OMD) released a brilliant comeback album, History Of Modern, that stunned fans and critics alike. Now, three years later, OMD, who worked on material for a new album even as their embarked on their successful world tour, have released English Electric. From the moment one hears the first two tracks (Please Remain Seated and Metroland), it is clear that OMD’s debt to German electronic legends Kraftwerk remains as strong as ever, with the former track consisting of an Asian voice-over announcement and the latter incorporating neo-classical motifs whilst singer-bassist Andy McCluskey delivers the melody in his inimitable way.

Longtime OMD fans will be thrilled to find that English Electric is as exciting and dynamic as History Of Modern, and younger electro-pop fans would do well to discover the roots of their current musical heroes. There are numerous echoes of OMD’s illustrious past within the songs: Helen Of Troy is a rather obvious counterpart to their early singles, Joan Of Arc and Joan Of Arc (Maid Of Orleans) — yes, they’re different songs; while Decimal recalls the more experimental moments of the 1983 album, Dazzle Ships. English Electric is a welcome addition to OMD’s revered discography. KEVIN MATHEWS
