SINGAPORE — This year’s President’s Star Charity live show was a lively event that raised S$6.32 million for the 64 charities supported by the President’s Challenge 2014.
In a first for the President’s Star Charity, members of beneficiary organisations joined MediaCorp and guest performers in nearly half of the segments of last night’s show.
For celebrity performers, it was a battle of the sexes as the men were pitted against the women in various challenges. Tay Ping Hui, Shabir, Sufie Rashid and Shaun Jansen tried to outdo Tabitha Nauser, Gayle Nerva, Vanessa Fernandez and Pavitra in their barbershop quartet sing-off.
In the dance-off, Gurmit Singh, Ian Fang, Joakim Gomez, James Seah and Jeremy Chan put on their Michael Jackson hats to perform the King of Pop’s Dangerous, while Jayley Woo, Julie Tan, Seraph Sun, Bonnie Loo and Bharathi Rani put up a rendition of Girls’ Generation’s The Boys.
A well-received lip-synching challenge saw Pierre Png impersonating Philip Oakey, Nadiah M Din doing her best MC Hammer impression, Chua Enlai miming Freddie Mercury, Sonia Chew in Britney Spears’ schoolgirl uniform and a blond-wigged Rosalyn Lee as Sia. But the act that drew the loudest laughs was Suhaimi Yusof’s inspired impersonation of Nicki Minaj.
Audiences also cheered for Malaysian singer Yuna, who belted out her hits Escape and Rescue; local band The Sam Willows, who played their song For Love with young violinist and beneficiary Sophie Soon; and Japanese dancer Miyoko Shida Rigolo, who performed the mesmerising Sanddorn Balance act using 14 palm branches and a single feather.
Other performers included RuanXian Chinese Ensemble, the three young prodigies who won the MediaCorp Symphony 92.4FM Young Talents Project 2014, fingerstyle guitarist Yan Neil Chan and beneficiaries Ain Society as well as visually impaired pianist Robert Tan.
The theme for this year’s show, hosted by Joanne Peh and Gurmit Singh, was Reach Out, Touch Lives.
