SINGAPORE — Irish actress Paula Malcomson has quite an impressive resume, starring in “alternative” television series such as Deadwood and Sons Of Anarchy, playing Katniss Everdeen’s mother in The Hunger Games movie saga, and exercising her thespian cred on well-known theatrical productions such as Pygmalion.

Now, she returns to our TV screens as Abby, the wife of the titular character in the series Ray Donovan. The show, set in Los Angeles, is about the city’s best fixer (played by Liev Schreiber), the lawyer whom celebrities, superstar athletes and business moguls call whenever they need help. Ray is also part of the Irish mob thanks to his father, Mickey (Oscar winner Jon Voigt), who was recently freed after 20 years in prison.

“None of us really knew what to expect,” said Malcomson about the series’ success. “It’s always fun to go back to a show where the audience is excited to (watch) a new season.”

Q: So what can the audience expect from the characters in the new season?

A: Well, you know, the first season really centred around Ray, but going into the second season, the characters (will be) spinning out a little, working on their own little agendas.

Q: Do the cast spend time together off-screen, seeing as how you all work odd hours?

A: (laughs) We don’t have a “typical day” on set: Maybe on Monday we’ll start at 5am, (but) on Friday we start at night ... there are never two days the same on this show and it’s really unpredictable. We don’t often do it after filming because we’re exhausted! But yes, Jon and I hang out — although that may be because we don’t have to film together all day! (laughs)

Q: What’s Jon Voigt like on set?

A: He’s amazing! He’s a really fun guy to work with — very inventive, loose and free as an actor and it’s amazing to watch him, actually. He really has a love for the work that we do.

Q: Is it different from working with Liev?

A: Well, it’s very different as husband and wife because it’s an intimacy set, but yeah (they’re both) great.

Q: Will you be working on any new projects?

A: Well, since we finish filming the second season some time in late July or early August, I’m actually trying not to have any (projects) for a while, so that I could spend some time with my family!
