SINGAPORE – Video streaming website Viki has acquired Singaporean drama, Perfect Girl. It is the first local drama to be acquired by Viki.

Produced by Singapore company BananaMana Films, Perfect Girl is about what happens when a guy meets his high school crush 10 years later.

Initially created as a 10-episode webseries, the project was filmed in Singapore for just USD$700. It has won seven international awards including Outstanding Drama Series at the Toronto Webfest 2015, Outstanding Lead Actress at the LA Webfest 2015 and Best International Series at the Atlanta Webfest 2014.

BananaMana Films, founded by Jason Chan and Christian Lee, also produced the series What Do Men Want, which aired on Mediacorp TV Channel 5 and Toggle in 2014.

“Getting our show in front of millions worldwide and having it cross language barriers is incredibly exciting,” said Chan, who also stars in Perfect Girl.

“Here in Singapore, we’re constantly being told that local content doesn’t travel but I think Perfect Girl proved that it can travel, and make a mark not only on the festival circuit but on a global network, too. We hope this can help pave the way for other locally made dramas to reach international audiences.”

Viki, an independent subsidiary of Japanese Internet services company Rakuten, gets nearly 40 million viewers each month. Perfect Girl will be rolled out as part of its Valentine’s Day offerings.
