GE2015: What went down on polling day

SINGAPORE — More than 2 million Singaporeans headed to the polls in the country's 12th General Election today (Sept 11).

SINGAPORE — More than 2 million Singaporeans headed to the polls in the country's 12th General Election on Sept 11, 2015. The People's Action Party won a total of 83 seats while the Workers' Party won six seat in this year's General Election. Overall, the PAP won 69.86% of the valid votes, while the WP won 12.48% of the valid votes.

(Sept 12) 2.30am: Mdm Halimah Yaacob says the PAP's win in Marsiling - Yew Tee GRC is both a happy and sad moment. She said: " I really wish my mother could have been here to be with me at this moment. But unfortunately she had passed away this morning. But I just want to say that there's a lot of work for us to do. We are really truly appreciative of the support given to us by residents of Marsiling-Yew Tee... We will roll up our sleeves and really work hard in order to improve lives in Marsiling-Yew Tee."

Madam Halimah said there are plans to improve infrastructure but her focus is on “the softer angle”. For instance, how to improve the lives of young families, children, needy families and elderly. “So we will focus more on programmes, more on the software, in order to enhance the lives of people in Marsiling-Yew Tee. But we certainly want to... move forward by working closely with residents, listening to them, making sure that they are also comfortable and are able to provide feedback and to support us in our ideas."

(Sept 12) 1.26am: CONFIRMED: Recount for Aljunied GRC underway with difference in vote count less than 2%, says ELD.

Here is the statement in full:

A recount of the votes may be allowed if the difference between the number of votes cast in favour of the candidate/group of candidates with the most votes and the number of votes cast in favour of any other candidate is equal to or less than 2% of the total number of valid votes cast.

The difference in the number of votes cast for the two groups of candidates from the People’s Action Party and The Workers’ Party in the electoral division of Aljunied is less than 2%. The PAP candidates have applied for a recount and the Returning Officer has allowed it.

A recount is now underway.

(Sept 12) 12.30am: WP's Lee Li Lian addresses crowd at Hougang Stadium, says she will ensure smooth handover of town council.

On her loss in Punggol East SMC, WP’s Lee Li Lian said the party respects the voters’ decision. On what could have caused her loss, she said there were many factors and she would have to evaluate them. Municipal issues could have been among the reasons, she said, but noted that the town council saga had hardly cropped up when she was speaking to residents on the ground.

Said Ms Lee: “Although it (her time as MP) was short , it was very meaningful. I have learnt a lot. It was a very humbling experience . You see people from different walks of lives having different sets of problems. I made a lot of friends. They are  very encouraging.” Ms Lee added she would not take the NCMP position, if offered.

5pm: The Elections Department announced that 2,085,676 Singaporeans have turned up to cast their votes at the 832 polling stations islandwide.

Politicians were also spotted casting their votes and observing the polling stations. 

The Singapore Democratic Alliance's Desmond Lim, who is leading a six-man team to contest Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC was spotted casting his vote at a polling station in Elias Road. He said he plans to visit 15-20 polling stations today.
