SINGAPORE — The Workers’ Party (WP) late yesterday (Sept 9) issued a statement challenging People’s Action Party (PAP) candidate Charles Chong’s charge that the WP “deliberately misquoted” him on Town Council finances.
WP attached a copy of a Lianhe Zaobao article published on Aug 28 with quotes by Mr Chong. Mr Chong’s press statement earlier had referred to a Lianhe Wanbao article published on Aug 25.
“The facts are clearly in contrary to the statements made by the PAP. We hope that the PAP will issue a correction to their misleading statements,” the WP said.
Separately, the WP issued a second statement Wednesday night, refuting a claim made in a PAP flyer that was being circulated.
The flyer, which was a letter by Mr Chong to Punggol East residents, said that Punggol East’s sinking fund of $22.5 million was transferred to Aljunied-Hougang-Punggol East Town Council (AHPETC) and was “now unaccounted for”.
However, the WP said that funds were “clearly accounted for”, and referred to a financial statement of sinking funds transferred to AHPETC.
The statement in the flyer “is incorrect and a malicious attempt at discrediting the Workers’ Party”, said the WP statement, signed off by AHPETC vice-chairman Png Eng Huat.
