There’s a lot of hype surrounding Hongkong singer-actress Gigi Leung’s small screen comeback in new Viu TV drama The Parents League.

It’s the 45-year-old star’s first drama serial in 15 years, and having her appear on screen these days is like witnessing the otters crossing a road in Singapore — it happens but you’ve got to be lucky enough to see it.

After all, Gigi, who married Spaniard Sergio Crespo Gutes in 2011, cut down on her onscreen work after giving birth to their daughter Sofia in 2015.

In The Parents League, Gigi plays Nora, an ambitious journalist who has to give up her high-flying career when her daughter enters kindergarten. As predictable as that premise sounds, the first episode offered a major surprise, courtesy of Sofia.

  Believe it or not, Sofia shows up in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo at around the halfway mark of the premiere ep.
  
  In the scene, Gigi and her onscreen husband played by Viu TV Ah Ge, Johnny Hui, accompany their kid on her first day of kindergarten. They enter a hall filled with kids and as the camera pans across the crowd, up pops Sofia who appears to then dart out of the camera’s way.
  
  Honestly, we don’t even know how netizens spotted her. She is onscreen for less-than-a-second and is standing in the background. We even had to replay the clip a few times, just to make sure it’s really Sofia.
  
  Having said that, it’s clear from that nano-second glimpse of Sofia that she really has inherited Gigi’s lanky genes seeing how she towers over the rest of the kids.

  So how did the cameo happen? According to HK01, Sofia was roped in to be part of the scene because she had visited her mum on set that day.
  
  Interestingly, in an interview three years ago, Gigi said she would never allow Sofia to guest in any of her shows because “kids aren’t as easy to control”.
