SINGAPORE — The current waves of minimalism and dainty accessories making their comeback onto the fashion scene, headed by Calvin Klein, Stella McCartney and vindicated by the legendary Ms Anna Wintour herself, have made minimalism the new trend. But Singaporean Angie Lai-Tay, the 31-year-old owner of Curated Editions, is firmly sticking to her philosophy that when it comes to jewellery, “more is more”.
“Personally, I just don’t get the minimalist look,” she said, “It looks so bare and naked! Accessories easily make a pared down casual (outfit) look instantly cooler with more street cred. It also gives a picture more depth and texture.”
With Curated Editions being the first to introduce statement brands such as Vita Fede, Guise and Playback to the local fashion scene, Lai-Tay insists all of her pieces are specially curated and selected to be a part of her eclectic mix of jewellery.
“My husband said I looked like a tree wearing three three-inch wooden bangles on both of my hands,.” she recounted. “I don’t blame him! Nothing is too quirky for me.”
Q: In your opinion, which accessory makes an outfit?
A: Rings, rings and more rings. They’re just got to fill up at least three fingers per hand before I feel ready for the world. I love Asian brands like Edge Of Ember and Tulola, both of which I stock. Without a doubt, accessories make the outfit much more stylised, modern and strong.
Q: What are the coming trends in the jewellery design industry that we should look out for?
A: I try not to follow trends. Rather, it is about how you feel wearing them. It seems semi-precious stones mixed with raw materials like unfinished brass are making waves. Designers these days don’t follow trends, they design for customers who have a sense of their own. A design, an idea, becomes a trend when high-street brands copy it and make it available to the masses. Don’t follow trends. Do wear what you like.
Q: You mentioned that different pieces speak different things about the wearer. What are some pieces that suit everybody?
A: Bracelets and rings. Surely you will find pieces that you can wear every day and have fun mixing them with your real jewellery. I find most people go for gold-coloured pieces these days. Perhaps our mum’s jewellery had an impact on us somehow!
Q: What do you look for when selecting pieces for Curated Editions’ collection?
A: It’s hard to define what we look for. Most importantly, they have to be items I would wear myself. A lot of the pieces end up on me!
Q: Do you have a fashion mantra that you abide by?
A: Dress like you are going to meet your enemy. Laetitia Wong
