SINGAPORE — Chile-born, New York-based contemporary artist and designer Sebastian Errazuriz has never been afraid of addressing controversial topics and pushing the boundaries through his work: Whether it’s public art installations in Times Square, or designing furniture as functional sculptures. Or, as in this latest occasion, shoes.

Errazuriz collaborated with Brazilian eco-friendly plastic shoe label Melissa to create 12 Shoes For 12 Lovers, a series of 12 shoe sculptures, each inspired by the memories of his former lovers, which originally made its debut showcase at Melissa’s own pop-up store during the 2013 Miami Art Basel. The shoe sculptures, each with amusing names such as Honey, Cry Baby, The Virgin and Heartbreaker, among others, are accompanied by personal photos and stories in which Errazuriz reveals a glimpse into each of the relationships and, in the process, exposes himself to scrutiny and judgment.

The installation then travelled to the Kunsthal Rotterdam, the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.

A limited edition capsule collection was then created in response to the positive reception to the installation and that has now arrived in Singapore at the Melissa MDREAMS Pop-Up Store located at Wheelock Place.

The limited edition Sebastian Errazuriz capsule collection here features two of the styles from the installation: Gold Digger, which depicts a man shouldering the weight of a shoe; and The Boss, which features brass knuckles on the underside of the heels.

And, yes, you can bring these home: Each style is going for S$590. Talk about well-heeled indeed. Genevieve Loh

The Melissa MDREAMS Pop-Up Store is at #B1-05B, Wheelock Place and is open until Nov 10.
