This round’s on DJ Jazzy Jeff
SINGAPORE — Mention DJ Jazzy Jeff to some people and the first thing they’ll probably think of is his partnership with rapper-turned-actor Will Smith, who went by the name The Fresh Prince, as a hip-hop duo in the ’80s.
DJ Jazzy Jeff is seriously talented, but also notably funny.
SINGAPORE — Mention DJ Jazzy Jeff to some people and the first thing they’ll probably think of is his partnership with rapper-turned-actor Will Smith, who went by the name The Fresh Prince, as a hip-hop duo in the ’80s.
The two had met by chance, and went on to produce hits like Summertime and Boom! Shake The Room, and would eventually become the first group to receive the Grammy for Best Rap Performance. Oh, and there was that TV show, The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air.
The original party rocker, whose real name is Jeffrey Townes, was in town earlier this month for a one-night-only event at Pangaea Nightclub, where the World DJ Champ and multiple-Grammy winner heated up the dance floor with his groovy beats and mixes.
Although one would think he would be just as loud as his erstwhile partner Smith, he wasn’t. But that doesn’t mean he isn’t cheeky.
When asked about the most memorable drink he has shared with Smith, he quipped: “Pink Panties, which is rainbow sherbet, orange juice and a lot of vodka. He’s going to kill me!”
As for his favourite drink philosophy, the man who gets any party going with his tunes simply said: “Don’t regret the video.”
Q: What was the best gig you’ve ever done?
A: There are too many to choose from. ZoukOut is one of the top. (He performed in 2004 and 2006).
Q: You’ve been here a couple of times. What’s the best poison to drink in hot Singapore?
A: I like a cool sweet iced tea… best summer drink ever.
Q: That doesn’t sound like a party drink, though. What about one that’s a perfect match for your most popular track, Summertime?
A: Summertime plus rum equals a great time!
Q: What is the craziest thing you’ve done after one too many drinks?
A: I sang in a restaurant once and got thrown out like Uncle Phil (from The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air).
Q: What is the biggest misconception about being DJ Jazzy Jeff?
A: That I’m serious all the time … I’m a big comedian.
Q: What are your guilty listening pleasures on your playlist?
A: Pharrell’s Happy is my favourite song of the year.
Q: How many drinks before you, well, Boom, Shake The Room?
A: I’m a lightweight, maybe two.
