What food will be served at the new Gudetama Cafe?

Expect cute dishes designed to look like cartoon character Gudetama.

SINGAPORE — First, it was Hello Kitty, then Pokemon — now, make some space in your tummy for yet another cartoon-themed eatery: The Gudetama cafe.

For those not familiar with the Sanrio cartoon character, Gudetama is a very, very lazy cartoon egg with bleary eyes and a persistent reluctance to get up and going. It is often seen hidden under a bacon blanket or sprawled belly-down, and as a raw egg, an omelette, a sunny-side-up or some other egg dish. Even its name acknowledges how unmotivated it is: “Gude” is a descriptive term for someone or something with no energy or strength, while “Tama” stems from tamago or egg in Japanese.

Gudetama will be setting up shop in a large 2,300sqft space at Suntec City and, of course, the place will be incredibly photogenic. Themed a ‘Food Playground’, the cafe will feature animated walls, waffle ceilings, egg-shaped booths and Gudetama figurines. There will even be an indoor garden with a green wall and a Gudetama water fountain. With photo-ready spots at every corner, be sure to charge up your phone or camera before dropping by.

Cute as the concept might be, as with any themed dining establishment, we’ve got to wonder — will the food match up to the hype? Well, the cafe is set up by the folks behind homegrown joints Joe & Dough and The Soup Spoon, so expect a selection of comforting, delectable crowd-pleasers, dressed up with Gudetama flair thanks to local bento artist Shirley Wong.

Sides include the Gudetama Lobster Onsen, lobster bisque with a poached egg decorated to look like Gudetama, while main courses include the “I’m Cold” Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict and Rib-“I” Don’t Care steak.

The highlight at any cafe is usually the dessert, and the creations at the Gudetama cafe are definitely out-of-the-box. There’s the Ta-Ma-Go — sushi cakes made with egg sponge cake and cheesecake coated with rice pops and served with maple syrup and matcha “wasabi” — and the “Shoyu Ramen” Set — chocolate and feuilletine cake topped with layers of chestnut Mont Blanc and Earl Grey jelly masquerading as a bowl of ramen.

After indulging in Gudetama chow and taking a million and one photos, complete your Gudetama cafe experience by bringing home limited-edition merchandise exclusive to Singapore from the retail section.

Before you run down to Suntec City in excitement, know that the Gudetama cafe will only open its doors on Wednesday (Nov 30). We’re going to take a leaf out of the lazy egg’s book and chill under our bacon blanket until then.

The Gudetama Cafe Singapore is located at #01-361 Suntec City Mall, 3 Temasek Boulevard, and opens from Nov 30. This article first appeared on www.ELLE.sg
