World’s weirdest chocolate bars

LONDON — Last week, Cadbury announced the arrival of their newest treat: A hybrid of seven of their most popular chocolate bars — in one bar. Designed with help from food artist Prudence Staite, the Cadbury Dairy Milk Spectacular 7 bar contains squares of its Caramel, Whole Nut, Fruit & Nut, Turkish Delight, Oreo, Daim bar and classic Dairy Milk. Sadly, the 200g “sharing” bar won’t be appearing on any shelves near you soon, as only 50 bars have been produced. (Chocolate fans can put themselves in the running for a bar by looking out for and retweeting a competition post on the @CadburyUK Twitter feed.)

However, Cadbury is not the first to experiment with bizarre flavours and gimmicks. Here’s our pick of some of the weirdest chocolate flavours out there.

KIT KAT’S PURPLE SWEET POTATO

Everyone knows about the famous green wasabi-flavoured Kit Kat in Japan, but that’s not all on offer in the unusual flavour department. In Japan, you can find pear, brown sugar syrup, blueberry shortcake and even this purple sweet potato flavour.

BACONLUXIOUS

What’s a “weird chocolate” round-up without an appearance from a bacon flavoured chocolate? Chuao Chocolatier describes its bar as having a “splash of maple syrup, a bit of bonfire smoked sea salt and crispy, uncured bacon bites” that add a new level of luxury to its creamy milk chocolate.

FRENCH TOAST

Komforte Chockolates specialise in “savoury combinations that are easy to love” and has a range of flavours from ramen to tortilla chips and French toast. Their French toast chocolate bar contains 33 per cent milk chocolate, bagel chips, cinnamon and nutmeg and, according to various Amazon reviews, tastes incredible.

PEANUTS AND KETCHUP

Though peanuts are commonly found in chocolate, the presence of ketchup in this bar from Zotter is what makes it one of the weirdest flavours around. It was made to celebrate Barack Obama’s presidential win in 2009 as a way “to celebrate American tastes”. Thankfully, this bar is no longer available.

MAYAN HEAT

This bar unusually contains no dairy products: Instead, it features algae, fruit and chilli and 70 per cent raw cocoa. Gnosis’ Mayan Heat chocolate bar promises to give you an authentic Mayan chocolate experience — if you can handle the heat, that is. THE DAILY TELEGRAPH
