Singapore — Tall and debonair, with a flawlessly chiselled face (his complexion is perfect even up close), Taiwanese celebrity make-up artist Xiao Kai is a one-man tour de force, helping beauty products fly off the shelves with his recommendations on wildly popular Taiwanese lifestyle television series Ladies First, where he is one of the resident beauty panelists and advisers.

The newly installed ambassador for Japanese skincare label Hada Labo was in town recently for a launch event, where he talked to TODAY about the common skincare misconceptions that Singaporean women have; plus a make-up tip that guarantees glowing skin that will withstand the current heatwave.

Misconception no. 1: Oily skin equals hydrated skin

“Oily skin does not mean that it is well-hydrated; and conversely, hydrated skin does not mean that it will look shiny. I have had naturally oily skin from when I was young, and my skin still needs hydration. Oily skin has too much sebum, and skin hydration is about moisture.”

Misconception no.2: Too much hydration causes breakouts

“Some people think that hydrating skincare, or too much hydration, causes breakouts, but they might simply not be using the right product. Most women have to try many brands before finding one that works for them; it’s a matter of trial and error. So if you encounter a skincare product that doesn’t work for you, don’t give up. Keep trying (others).”

Misconception no.3: Good skin doesn’t need looking after

“A lot of women with good complexions don’t think that they need to look after their skin because it’s already in good condition. They wait till they can see wrinkles appearing before using skincare, but by then, it’s too late. Prevention is better than cure.”

Misconception no. 4: Humidity-proof make-up has to be matte

“The glowy Korean-drama-type complexion is popular right now, and it gives more dimension to the face. If you want that glowy effect without applying shimmery highlighters or you find BB creams too dewy, add a little of the new Hada Labo Hydrating Essence to your foundation and mix it up carefully before blending onto the skin. It gives a slight gleam and keeps skin hydrated without looking greasy. It also works with all kinds of foundation.”

Misconception no.5: Skipping skincare steps won’t make a difference

“Taiwanese women have a lot more patience and are systemic about their skincare regimen; they are willing to spend the time to go through each step. Singaporean women want their skincare very simple. Maybe they are concerned about (layering skincare in) the hot weather or are just a bit lazier. Following the proper steps does make a big difference. For me, I immediately apply the Hada Labo Hydrating Essence after the Super Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Lotion so it absorbs better. I also apply the Hydrating Essence as a mask during a flight to keep my skin from drying out.”
