SINGAPORE — A new boutique hotel brand has quietly taken root here. Hotel G Singapore, part of the GCP Hospitality Group, which owns the popular Hotel G in San Francisco and Pullman Hotel G in Bangkok, opened to guests last week after taking over the building previously occupied by Big Hotel.

“Hotel G Singapore is a lifestyle hotel, combining the best in guest services and experiences with unique communal spaces, in-vogue restaurants and bars, and trendy decor,” explained the hotel’s general manager Jason Dowd, pointing to the brand’s successful sister properties in Bangkok, Pattaya, Hong Kong and San Francisco, which some Singaporeans might be familiar with. The property here, he promised, is just as snazzy—with artworks by photo studio YellowKorner in all 308 rooms, combined with elements such as a “vintage-ambience gym”.

Q: How does Hotel G differentiate itself from other boutique brands such as Hotel Indigo by the Intercontinental Hotel Group
and Yotel?
A: We’ll see less of a distinction between a traditional hotel restaurant and a neighbourhood hangout, with locals, not just hotel guests, spending time here. At Hotel G, we seek to better understand the food and wine we serve, putting focus on the quality and origin of the ingredients rather than the formality of the room and hotel service. This helps give us an edge over other hotels. We also have our various communal spaces and exciting event programmes, which will encourage guests to hang out and mingle.

Q: What’s so special about the food served at Hotel G?
A:  Opening in January 2017, Ginett and 25 Degrees are both managed by professional restaurateurs. Ginett Restaurant & Wine Bar is a vibrant, casual-dining place serving farm-to-table dishes, fresh market specials, cold cuts and cheeses, as well as exclusive wines and cocktails in a cosy communal setting perfect for socialising. 25 Degrees, which is an offshoot of the much-loved legendary Hollywood flagship, is an American-style bordello burger bar serving award-winning gourmet burgers,
with the drinks to match.

Q: Personally, what do you look for in a hotel?
A: I have seen a lot of hotels in my day, and have come up with a checklist of what’s important to me: A convenient location, easy access to transport, great connectivity, a vibrant atmosphere, warm and friendly service, comfortable beds, and a little something extra.

Q: As a hotelier, what do you wish hotel guests did more or less of?
A: I always hope that guests will take the time to enjoy the little creature comforts offered in the rooms. Serene Lim
