SINGAPORE — You’d expect the wife of skincare guru Peter Thomas Roth to have her suitcase overflowing with beauty potions. Not quite.
“I try to simplify things. Smaller is better so I pack travel-sizes for everything,” revealed Roth, who’s also the managing director of the Peter Thomas Roth skincare range. She was in town as part of beauty giant Sephora’s spring launch. And her travels, interestingly, have inspired one of her new products — the Camu Camu Power Cx30 Vitamin C Brightening Sleeping Mask.
“We encountered the Camu Camu in Brazil. It’s a berry that’s larger than a grape and it’s trademarked. You can only bring it out in powder form.” Then again, this is a hardcore beauty junkie who checks out all sorts of beauty products, ingredients and treatments during her trips. “It’s my favourite thing to do. I ask a lot of questions, I always go, ‘What’s this for?’ And I end up buying a lot of stuff.”
Q: What are some of the things you like to buy on your travels?
A: Peter and I always buy all kinds of stuff and I’d try to get something for our Christmas tree so there’s a little something from everywhere. I bought a little horse here (because of the Chinese New Year celebrations) and it’d be on the Christmas tree next year. Yes, there have been some duds — like a teapot in Bali from our honeymoon. It’s made of coconut shells and comes with matching forks and knives. It’s one of those what-was-I-thinking and when-would-I-use-them sort of thing.
Q: What are your travel must-haves?
A: I bring lightweight long-sleeved gauzy tops and scarves. I’m diligent about putting sunscreen. We have a powder sunscreen, the Instant Mineral Powder, which is really great as you can put it over makeup and on the scalp of your hair. It works immediately.
Q: As a spa junkie, what are some of the amazing spa treatments you have tried?
A: Peter’s family’s Hungarian and in Hungary there are century-old spas which are absolutely beautiful but not exactly luxurious in their treatments. It’s very down to business. You can get doctor’s prescriptions for them and they work. I also just had the most amazing massage in Hyatt on The Bund. I was having a migraine in Shanghai until I lay down on that table. It was a miracle.
Q; Any interesting holidays planned for 2014?
A: Peter and I will go through England to do cemetery hopping. One of my hobbies is genealogy and I discovered a part of my family is from England. The English have good records so I’ve been able to trace the lineage back to 1300s. My 16th great-grandfather was a captain under King Henry IV. We’ll be visiting churches and cemeteries to see what else I can find there.
