SINGAPORE — A 41-year-old man was on Sunday (Sept 8) charged with murdering a 48-year-old woman at Maxwell Food Centre.

Wu Tao allegedly committed the crime inside a hawker stall named Dao Xiang Ju, between 10.25pm and 10.53pm on Friday.

The Chinese national and Singapore permanent resident was arrested at about 1.30am on Saturday at Bukit Merah East Neighbourhood Police Centre where he informed officers that he had stabbed a woman.

Police were then deployed to the scene where the victim, Tan Kamonwan, was pronounced dead by paramedics.

Preliminary investigations revealed that both parties are known to each other, according to the police in an earlier media release.

The man was ordered to be remanded at Changi Prison's Complex Medical Centre for medical examination and is scheduled to return to court on Sept 27.

He faces the death penalty if found guilty of murder. CNA
