Rookie postman overlooked mail bundles after they toppled into letterbox ditch: SingPost

SINGAPORE — The postman who left undelivered letters and parcels at the foot of a Tampines housing block is a rookie who had just started delivering mail on his own, SingPost said on Friday afternoon (April 26).

SINGAPORE — The postman who left undelivered letters and parcels at the foot of a Tampines housing block is a rookie who had just started delivering mail on his own, SingPost said on Friday afternoon (April 26).

He had placed the mail on a ledge near the letterboxes, but overlooked the bundles after they toppled into the letterbox ditch, the postal services provider said. The ditch is a receptacle for unwanted mail.

The postman joined the company a month ago and had completed classroom and on-the-job training with an experienced colleague a few days before the incident.

Without elaborating, SingPost said it would address his oversight “in an appropriate manner”.

It thanked the member of the public, Ms Joanne Li, for reporting the matter and safekeeping the mail — which it expects to deliver by Friday evening.

In a series of photos posted on Facebook on Thursday evening, Ms Li said she had found mail “belonging to various units being thrown at the wastepaper ditch at the letter box”.

The letters and parcels were addressed to residents near Tampines Street 83.

Ms Li added that she was “not sure what (had) happened but for sure we have lost some parcels here”.

She wrote: “But fret not, these are in good hands with me. Singapore Post I am not redistributing these two stacks for you. (Please) contact me to get your letters back and do a thorough investigation on what exactly happened.”

SingPost contacted her, retrieved the mail and investigated the incident.

Said Ms Li in an update: “There could be various reasons why this had happened, but honestly it should not be happening. Packages aside, there are letters that are of private and confidential nature that you don't want them to be lost just like that.”

SingPost has made the news in recent months for its lapses.

A postman was arrested in January after he allegedly dumped the mail of some Ang Mo Kio residents into a dustbin.

In February, the Info-communications Media Development Authority imposed a fine of S$100,000 on SingPost for failing to meet the delivery standards of local basic letters and registered mail on nine occasions in 2017.

A month later, the company was fined S$300,000 for failing to meet quality service standards in the delivery of letters last year.
