SINGAPORE — After hearing the news that a 35-year-old woman and her five-week-old daughter were found dead at the foot of Block 81, Bedok North Road on Thursday (Oct 29), a convenience store nearby is pooling together some money for the family.

A resident who gave his name only as Mr Lim told TODAY on Friday that he gave a “small sum” when he found out about the deaths, describing the incident as a tragedy.

“I don’t really know them because I don’t live at the block, but it’s really sad,” Mr Lim said.

The people running the convenience store declined to comment.

Chinese evening daily Shin Min Daily News identified the deceased woman as Tay Mei Mei.

Her neighbour said that she has not seen the woman recently.

“But when we met each other in the lift or around the neighbourhood, we would say 'hello' and chat. She’s a very friendly and cheerful person — the whole family is really friendly,” Mrs Tan, who is in her 40s, said. She declined to give her full name.

A 29-year-old relative of the deceased who gave his name only as Mr Tan said: “She was very cheerful and kind whenever we met during Chinese New Year.”

When TODAY visited the scene on Friday evening, a wake for the woman and baby had already started.

There were about 20 people present. Family members appeared solemn and some were crying while paying respects to the deceased.

Photos of the mother and daughter were put up at their caskets.

The police said on Friday that they were alerted to the incident at 5.47pm on Thursday.

The pair were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police investigations are ongoing.
