SINGAPORE — Since 2013, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has been working closely with car dealers and manufacturers to conduct 43 rounds of recalls of vehicles with defective airbags involving Takata, the Japanese automotive parts maker at the centre of a global recall.
The recalls in Singapore involve eight vehicle makes and about 130,000 airbag inflators, said LTA in a statement on Thursday (Aug 4).
Automakers worldwide have recalled about 50 million vehicles with Takata inflators, which can explode with too much force and spray shrapnel at drivers and passengers. The defective inflators have been linked to 13 deaths and more than 100 injuries globally. The LTA said the vehicles that are most at risk are prioritised for recall.
To date, 88 per cent of the Takata airbag inflators whose recalls were initiated before 2015 have been rectified. For recalls initiated from 2015 onwards, 32 per cent have been rectified.
The LTA also said that motor dealers and parallel importers who have sold vehicles affected by any safety-related vehicle recall must notify the agency and the affected vehicles’ owners; make the necessary arrangements to rectify the defects; and update the LTA on the progress of the rectification works.
Vehicle owners who have received recall notifications should contact their motor dealers, which will give an estimate of how long it will take to replace the part and any interim precautionary measures that should be taken.
Vehicle owners can also log in to the Electronic Vehicle Recall System (EVRS) in the One.Motoring portal or contact the respective motor dealers to check if their vehicle is affected by any recall.
The LTA said it will continue to monitor the situation closely.
