47-year-old man arrested for Teck Whye temple murder

SINGAPORE — A 47-year-old man has been arrested for murder, following the discovery of a body at Chua Chu Kang Lian Sing Keng temple a week and a half ago.

SINGAPORE — A 47-year-old man has been arrested for murder, following the discovery of a body at Chua Chu Kang Lian Sing Keng temple a week and a half ago.

The suspect, a Chinese Singaporean, was nabbed on Wednesday (Feb 24) after investigations by officers from the Criminal Investigation Department, the police said on Thursday.

On the morning of Feb 14, the body of the victim, Tan Poh Huat, 53, was discovered by a worker who had unlocked the gates of the temple. TODAY understands that the victim had sustained a head injury. Police received a call for assistance at 6.59am. Tan was pronounced dead by paramedics at 7.09am.

Tan was believed to have been unemployed and had been living in the temple for the past five years.

The suspect will be charged in court on Friday with the offence of murder under section 302(1) of the Penal Code, chapter 224, which carries the death penalty.

In a separate case, a 50-year-old man who was arrested on Thursday will also be charged in court on Friday for murder. The man, a Singaporean Chinese, was arrested at the vicinity of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1. This was after a 37-year-old man was found injured at Blk 23, Hougang Avenue 3 early on Thursday morning. The 37-year-old man was conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital where he was subsequently pronounced dead at about 3.28am.
