68-year-old Grab driver dies after collision with lorry in Ang Mo Kio

SINGAPORE — A 68-year-old private-hire car driver died after a collision with a lorry at the junction of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5 and Ang Mo Kio Industrial Park 2 on Sunday (Oct 16).

The police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they were alerted at around 1pm to the accident.

They also said that the accident involved a bus, without giving further details.

The car driver, who worked for Grab, was taken unconscious to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, where he later died from his injuries. 

His passenger, a 33-year-old woman, and the lorry driver, a 55-year-old man, were taken to hospital in a conscious state.

The police said the lorry driver and the bus driver, a 65-year-old man, are assisting with investigations.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Manpower said on Monday that the driver’s death is the 40th workplace fatality this year. 

It is the fifth workplace fatality this year that involved delivery riders or private-hire car drivers, the spokesperson added. 

“He was ferrying a passenger along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5 towards Buangkok Green and was making a discretionary right turn at the traffic junction of Ang Mo Kio Industrial Park 2, when a lorry travelling in the opposite direction collided into the car,” the spokesman said.

In response to queries from TODAY, Grab said that it was "very saddened" by the incident, and that it was extending its support to the deceased driver's family, as well as the affected passenger.

Photos and videos circulating on social media show a damaged white Toyota Axio car and the lorry which collided onto its left side.
