SINGAPORE — Nine men aged between 24 and 54 are assisting with investigations into an alleged case of rioting at a migrant workers' dormitory in Changi, the police said on Thursday (Jan 19).

In response to TODAY’s queries, the police said that they were alerted to a fight that took place in a dormitory along Tanah Merah Coast Road at 10.38pm on Tuesday.

"Upon (the) police’s arrival, the fighting had ceased," they added.

They established the identities of those believed to be involved in the fight through follow-up investigations and with the aid of closed-circuit television images.

Investigations are ongoing.

They did not state the name of the dormitory or the nationalities of the men helping with their probe.

A video clip of the fight, which has been circulating on messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, showed several men fighting and shouting at each other at a staircase.

Some of them were topless and it was unclear what sparked the dispute.

In the video, which is two minutes and 21 seconds long, eight men can be seen throwing punches at one another at a staircase leading from the ground floor to the second floor.

A short while later, one of the men was held with his head pushed down as three men took turns to hit him with their hands.

At one point, as another man wearing a yellow T-shirt ran up the staircase, he appeared to be kicked on his chest by a man wearing only underwear.

Some of the men then ran through a door and it was unclear what happened to them after that.

The camera then shifted to an open courtyard on the ground floor, where dozens of workers were standing around. Shouting could still be heard in the background.

The clip then also showed a group of around five men walking towards the staircase, before it ended with this group of men engaged in a verbal exchange with others.
